Mamelodi's Fight to Clean Up the Communities
The walk took place on the 14th of June starting at 3:15am where the team departed from Big Save Hammanskraal and walked an incredible 55km to Big Save Waltloo.
The main aim of the walk is to raise awareness on substance abuse in the communities. More importantly, the hope is to help rehabilitate these drug users who have come forward asking for help. The Department of Social Development joined in and informed the community on the service points in Mamelodi and Hammanskraal where those who need help with their addiction can receive it. Services are free and the programme is subsidized by the government.
Thabo Kgotsi from Thandanani commented that: “The walk was not easy but we managed to make it to the end. We are not doing it for us but to pave a smooth path for the children.” “Prevention is better than cure” Among the team to walk, twenty of them were previous drug users that Thandanani helped. They walked to encourage their peers that it is possible to live without drugs.
